The main healthcare challenge for patients suffering from rare diseases is to ensure a good diagnosis and adequate treatment. "It is essential for healthcare professionals to know what the diseases are in order to achieve a correct diagnosis of patients and to offer good genetic counselling to affected families," says Dr. Itziar Astigarraga, head of the Paediatrics Service at Cruces University Hospital and member of the Basque Government's Advisory Council on Rare Diseases.
