October 2, 2023

On Monday, October 2, AELMHU attended the IV Symposium of the Healthcare Observatory 'The changes that today's healthcare needs'. These meetings were attended by José Manuel Miñones, Minister of Health; Héctor Gómez, Minister of Industry; Silvia Calzón, Secretary of State for Health; Raquel Yotti, Secretary General for Research of the Ministry of Science and Innovation; Fátima Matute Teresa, Minister of Health of the Community of Madrid; and Marciano Gómez, Minister of Health of the Generalitat Valenciana; among other senior government officials, representatives of the main healthcare companies and associations in our country and leading specialists in the sector.

Isabel Pineros, director of the Access Department of Farmaindustria, María José Sánchez, president of the Spanish Association of Orphan and Ultra Orphan Drug Laboratories (AELMHU), Núria Sabaté, managing director responsible for the Pharmaceutical Industry at Accenture in Spain, Portugal and Israel, and Jaume Pey, general director of anefp, participated in the round table on 'What is the pharmaceutical industry demanding and what can it contribute'.

Our president explained the problems faced by the laboratories and therefore also by the patients, i.e. "the most important problem is access to these orphan drugs in Spain, where it takes a very long time to develop a drug until we know the rare disease and then a whole investment of resources and people".

In this line, he emphasized that what the industry is asking for is that "when it reaches the EMA, the approval is accelerated and reaches the patients who have been waiting for it for a long time because it is not normal that it takes so long for these patients to have access to the treatments".

Thus, during both days, we have been able to listen to different sessions, divided into focuses, which have analyzed the current healthcare situation, the great challenges of the healthcare system, the novelties of the industry and the digitalization of the sector, as well as possible solutions to the problems previously raised, among many other topics.
